Prescription Drug Abuse

  • An estimated 11.4 million persons aged 12 or older used prescription pain medication non-medically
  • Males were slightly more likely than females to abuse prescription drugs
  • Rates of prescription drug misuse were highest among young adults aged 18-25
  • Long-term use of opioids can lead to physical dependence and addiction
  • Taking prescription drugs in high doses and for non-medical reasons can lead to compulsive use and physical damage 
 

What is Methamphetamine (Meth)?  

  • Chemically similar to adrenaline.
  • Stimulates the central nervous system to produce more of the “feel good” hormone, dopamine.
  • With repeated uses, damages the dopamine producing cells in the brain.
  • It is highly addictive.
  • Increases heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and rate of breathing.
  • Increases libido.
  • Decreases appetite.
  • Produces short, intense rush that is followed by a sense of euphoria and invulnerability lasting up to 8 hours.
  • Made with cold pills, solvent and a metal; processed with other household chemicals.
  • Can be smoked, snorted, injected, or swallowed.
